Bondi 36

Design

The design brief for the Bondi 36 was to develop the ultimate, no compromise cruiser/racer. The owner wanted to go short hand cruising on the river Elbe, the North and Baltic Seas as well as race in these waters.
To fulfil this design brief carbon fibre was used from stem to stern to minimise weight and maximise stiffness. A material choice that is usually reserved for high spec racing yachts.
Unlike a pure racing yacht the Bondi 36 has a comfortable cruising interior. There is a V bunk in the front, a proper head, saloon, two aft bunks and even a fridge, hot water system and heater. Equipment one would not find on a racing yacht.
To minimise the performance impact of the cruising interior all panels were made from carbon fibre as well. This includes all bulkheads, floor boards and even details like the galley drawers and the ice box.
The interior styling is friendly and modern with clear coated carbon finish bench and table surfaces, wood accents on doors and bright, white paint.
To achieve blistering performance efficiency was maximised. The hull has a relatively narrow waterline, which minimises drag. There is plenty of sail area. To balance this power the ballast to displacement ratio is more than 54% with 2.3t in the lead bulb of the deep T-keel. In addition, two 500 l water ballast tanks are located in the aft bunk area to compensate for the missing race crew weight when sailing short-handed.
The result of these design choices is dinghy like handling, cruising at planning speeds and blistering upwind performance. At moderate wind the yacht cruises at 10 – 12 knots on a beam reach with 2 people on board. Upwind speeds of 7.3 kn are common with a TWA of about 36 degrees. It even reaches planning speeds under engine power. The owner can sleep in and still reach the next port before the rest of the pack even if the competition is 10 ft longer.

Construction

Construction methods employed are state of the art, certainly for a home building project. The hull and deck are made from carbon fibre sandwich construction with foam core. The hull outer skin was hand laminated in one setting using a slow curing epoxy resin. This operation basically took all day and the goal was to apply the vacuum bag before the resin starts to gel. Obviously a stressful job.

For this reason vacuum infusion with an epoxy resin was used for the hull inner skin and both deck skins. This process is much more forgiving. There is unlimited time to place all the reinforcing fibres. When everything is ready the plumbing and vacuum bag is applied and vacuum tests are carried out to ensure the bag is air tight. After everything has been checked and double checked vacuum is applied and the resin taps are opened. The actual infusion process is completed in about 30 minutes.

In order to infuse the first skin of the deck it was necessary to make the foam core air tight. This requires careful bonding of the foam strips and air leak testing. It is definitely worth the effort in order to avoid messy hand laminating. This innovative approach removed the requirement for an air tight mould and therefore saved considerable time and money. Ideal for a one off home building project.

The weight of the hull shell is approximately 325 kg whereas the deck weights 200 kg.

All other interior parts are also made from carbon sandwich panels with foam core. This includes the fridge compartment and the galley drawers. The standing rigging is attached to the hull via carbon straps or solid carbon plates.
The rudder is also full carbon and weighs about 11 kg. It is designed to withstand more than 2.6 t which would be equivalent to stalling the rudder at about 16 knots of boat speed.

The mast is carbon fibre with stainless steel rod rigging and a carbon fibre boom. The retractable bowsprit was made from a carbon tube.

There are only 3 major metal parts used on the whole yacht. One is the 2.3 t lead bulb. The second is the keel fin, which is welded steel construction. Metal is still unavoidable for the engine.
